Great Wass Island Preserve

Kerry and I decided to explore Great Wass Island today. The weather was perfect and we wanted to get out of the house, as well as get some exercise. My inlaws and Kerry had gone to this island last year but I never made it. It definitely ranks up as one of my favorite trails to hike. The trail included several varieties of terrain, from roots and dirt, to boardwalks and several large boulders. I love the trees through these island landscapes, they’re small and scraggly growing in directions clearly blown by the Atlantic wind. In the woods the temperature was perfect, we worked up a good sweat. Along the trail I managed to scare a red squirrel and a spruce grouse. At the terminus of the trail we got an incredible view of the Atlantic Ocean. We had the […]

A Trip to Acadia

Thursday was the one day with a guaranteed window of sun. We decided to head down as a group to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Our first stop was to Bar Harbor Bike Shop to rent Kerry a bike. My CR-V was fully loaded for the day, 2 kayaks and 3 bikes. We headed over to Eagle Lake to ride the shore side and then up to Bubble Pond. There were signs and warnings of wash outs. For comparison, we’ve been coming here this same week of June for about 4-5 years now. Two years ago, the streams were so bone dry it looked like it hadn’t rained in many weeks. This year the gravel from the carriage trails was washed all through the woods. In one spot the water was rushing so loudly and going over the banks […]

Acadia : Day 3 : Witches Hole

Morning came pretty soon. Woke up around 7:30am. Actually Tiff woke me up when she sent an instant message to my cell phone. LOL. Only thing that sucks about camping is having to walk in the cold to the bathroom. But at least the bathrooms are clean and not too cold. We headed into town this morning and went to the organic grocer picked up some groceries and also had breakfast there. After there we headed into the park, got lost on the loop road, but made it back to where we wanted to go. We did the loop ride around Witches Hole. It was 3.4 miles with quite a few hills, nothing serious, but when your seriously out of shape, it all feels serious. LOL. The weather was incredible again today. Below are some pics from the ride.

Out for a Spin

Well today, we took the bikes out for a ride. I didn’t think to bring along the camera for the ride, but I did get a pic of how the bikes are set up on the CRV. We headed up to South Kent and took a 5.5 mile ride down a road that runs along the river. It’s mostly dirt and has some paths to go explore along the edges of the woods. The hills didn’t appear bad, and by car they don’t seem bad but by bike, they were enough to get my heart pumping out of my chest. I thought my legs were going to fall off at one point. I should preface this with, I’m extremely out of shape, pretty overweight, and haven’t riden seriously since I was about 14. Oh yeah and I don’t exercise regularly. […]

Is there such a thing as perfect weather?

Yes! and I know because I experienced it today. Absolutely perfect weather. Sunny, no humidity, dark blue sky, light fluffy white clouds, and a nice breeze. You can not ask for a more perfect day. Oh yeah and it was a perfect 70 degrees. This is the kind of weather where you can work up a sweat and it’s taken a way by that nice breeze and you cool off again. So on a day like today, I went kayaking. Craig’s parents had their campsite set up at Lake Waramaug in New Preston. If you’ve never been I highly recommend it. It’s a beautiful lake, the state park is very nice, and generally it’s pretty quiet. We went up on Saturday evening, had some marshmallows over the fire, and then headed home. Sunday, we headed back up after church, and […]
