I tried to make myself a wrap on Monday but it was less than stellar. I managed to get through half of it, but then put the rest back in the container.

My wrap consisted of:

Tomato Basil Tortilla Wrap

Sabra Hummus (as a spread)

Alfalfa Sprouts

Roasted Red Pepper

1/2 Avacado

Lemon Juice (added when I went to eat it

It seemed to be lacking flavor, I tried to add lemon juice to make it a bit tastier but I think I should have actually used more roasted red peppers.

Today’s wrap was quite a bit tastier. This is what it consisted of.

Tomato Basil Tortilla Wrap

Sabra Hummus (as a spread)

Alfalfa Sprouts

Roasted Red Pepper

1/2 Avacado

Couscous with Pine Nuts

Cannellini Beans

I’m thinking of trying some seasoned tofu in my next round of experiments along with getting better at actually wrapping up wraps.

A big issue for me going vegetarian or vegan, is I do not love beans. Granted I like Tofu, even though too much of that doesn’t really like me. Great, the story of my life. So I’m wondering about some alternative protein sources. My sister in law pointed me toward cannellini beans which I like a lot more than kidney beans. But outside of those I’m not sure. I do eat tofu on occasion, had some Tofu Pups the other night and I like Boca Burgers. But what else is out there?

Tonight’s dinner was quite yummy as I’ve rediscovered couscous.

I got The Kind Diet for Christmas, along with Chef Keith Snow’s book Harvest Eating. I’ve flirted, as Alicia would say, with vegetarianism for probably 11 years. I’ve never stuck to it. My own laziness and lack of commitment is what usually has me faltering. The Kind Diet is a step further with going vegan. I grew up in a family that loved their milk, cheese and eggs. I stopped drinking cow’s milk about 8 years ago. I’ll have it in a hot chocolate or coffee, but that it. Cheese on the other hand is my Achilles’s heal. I love it! But I also know it doesn’t always love me and my sinuses always clog up after having too much cheese.

My schedule is still a bit crazy to get into cooking big meals. This past weekend I decided to simplify, choose only meals that could be quick, not even heated and still fall under the vegan and healthy guidelines.

I made home guacamole for the first time. It was awesome! I’ve been eating oatmeal and fruit for breakfast. I cooked up crispy orange tofu from the Kind Diet cookbook. Tonight I made couscous, which I haven’t had in a very long time. I also attempted to make a wrap for lunch. I used a tomato tortilla, hummus, roasted red peppers, avocado and sprouts. It was…ok…I need to figure out something to first add more flavor, but also make the avocado a bit smaller. I used chunks and I wasn’t really loving it.

I’ve also gotten into the habit of impromptu exercising. My Mom called me up on Saturday and gave me a 20 minute notice if I wanted to go for a walk. I was in the middle of working on some projects, but I decided, this nice weather doesn’t come along that often and I need to get out from behind the desk. So off I went for a good walk. Tonight, I was waiting for Craig to be free but he got busy with a few different things. I watched as the sun went down more and more, and said, screw it, I need to take advantage of this weather. So I took myself out and went for a walk. 45 minutes later and my heart pumping I feel much better.

I’ve always made the excuse of not enough time, energy and being too busy as to why I didn’t just get out and exercise. It’s fun… you only live once right? and I’m sick of not being able to take off my rings and not being as flexible several years ago. I’m only 31, not 61.

Well maybe not entirely. I used to love the winter, but that was when I lived in a house that actually stayed warm. Our apartment when the wind kicks up can be very hard to keep warm. Thus I’m kind of missing those days of basking in the sun and feeling warm all the way through. I took this photo over last summer on our only visit to White Memorial that year. I’m determined to get out and enjoy the outdoors in 2010. It seems like so long ago but in 2006, I was biking at least once a week and doing all sorts of other things outdoors.

In the spirit of getting in better health

This past week I ate vegetarian from Sunday through Thursday. Friday we started running out groceries, time and I caved and picked up Starbucks for breakfast, Subway for lunch and pizza for dinner. Lesson learned though, as my stomach was none too happy with my meal choices and I spent the evening in a lot of pain. Which leads me to thinking, maybe I do have some level of lactose intolerance. The weekend was filled with lots of out and about activities, and I made decisions that were fairly good.

I’m looking forward to going back to eating simpler, not so rich foods this week. My goal for this week is to continue with primarily vegetarian meals and get in at least two days of exercise. I have to work on my core to help my back, which has been bothering me again. I am also planning to map out different places to mountain bike between home and work. Along with that, I’m putting together a shopping list of winter bike gear; booties, pants and a bright orange fleece jacket (I like my life).

While doing errands this morning in the bitter cold, the ideas going through my head were the different items I want to service on my car. It frustrates me to no end that I slacked on keeping the wheels clean over the past 4 years and because of that, brake dust has become caked on.

I look under the hood and there’s definitely surface rust on strut bolts and my air horns need to be polished and other items need a coat of armor all. These little things irk me. To add to it, my hood has some chips (8 years of highway commuting, it’s a miracle it’s not worse) and this past fall an acorn tree did some dent damage.

I want to bring my wonderful 8 year old vehicle back to new. Ok, well maybe not brand new, but looking good and feeling tight again. Of course this will take some money and definitely time on my part.

This got me thinking about how much my father’s meticulous attention to detail and care for all items in our home has carried on to me. When I was younger this was a bit insanely stressful. I was always in fear of things not looking exactlyas how I borrowed them.

All of this led me to realize, I am willing to take ridiculous measures to keep things looking new, in pristine shape and thus the ability to last a long time, except my own body. Most celebrities musicians or actors have to treat their bodies as a product, because it is for their professions. I have never really looked at mine like this, instead it was the one item hindering me from just getting things I wanted to get done. Ironically enough, my thought process has been more of a, “When is someone coming to take care of this thing”.

That thing is my own body, so no one else, other than me is going to be taking care of it. For most people this is pretty obvious, but I’ve spent the last 10+ years doing most of my living in my head; reading, studying, creating, analyzing, philosophising. Much like my car, with time and money it is possible to restore my body to a better state, looking “new” again.

While on vacation we had planned to get some biking in. I’ve been pretty out of it this past year. Also it’s not advised for Craig while he has his neck issue.

We finally got a break in weather on Wednesday and we headed into the National Forest to the Lincoln Woods trail. We talked to these wonderful park rangers who gave us our options. They said the trail that leads up to the falls has “some” railroad ties left in place. Ok… not a problem, because it’s a rail trail, so guaranteed nothing more than a 3% grade and a few railroad ties is not a big deal.

Turns out it was lots of railroad ties. The trail turned out to be a lot of fun. The way out to the falls and trail terminus (for bicyclists) was 2.8 miles, it was also the 3% up. Imagine having to bike over roots and rocks, but throw in speed bumps every 3-4 feet, you’ve got the Lincoln Woods trail. About 3/4 way out I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to keep going. It was really kicking my butt and I was burning out. Craig stopped with me while I caught my breath and we decided to give it a little more.

One positive of the trail is on either side of the ties there is a small path to ride that is just dirt and roots. I was wondering how I was going to do on the way back but was glad to be able to rest when we got to the bridge.

The ride back turned out to be a lot of fun. It was 3% grade down. It pushed me to use my biking skills to pick a good line, avoid the nails that were still in some of the ties, ride out of the saddle to avoid destroying my butt and back. I also realized after a good mile that I would need to float my hands on my handlebars because my wrists were getting very sore. As usual my extra weight gave me quite a bit of momentum going down hill, I even hopped my bike up on to a bridge and kept going. I felt great after the ride, I loved the technicalities of the trail and was ready to go do it again the next day.

If your in that area, have a mountain bike, go do this trail. For those experienced and in shape riders this probably won’t be much of a challenge, but for the novice group it’s a good and safe technical challenge.

I decided to create our own site to log our progress, keep up motivation and keep it semi-private. As you can see from the Archive dates, we’ve had some starts and stops along the way.

This year I decided to record videos of my progress. Also joining in is my sister in law and my mother in law. My best friend Kelly, who is much more on top of nutrition and exercise regimens is writing full blown articles for us and keeping us motivated. Late last year she did the P90X and had great results. Craig and I picked up a copy of Power90, which was more our speed.

A year and several months later after putting my back out quite severely I’m feeling well enough to take on a consistent exercise routine. Turning 30 also put a bit more fuel on the fire as well.

Life’s too short to not enjoy every bit of sunshine I can get, breath fresh air and do it in a body I vaguely remember. I am happy I am able to recall the feeling of being very limber and having done gymnastics when I was younger. I used to be pretty coordinated. I can see myself now doing things in a body that is yet to be discovered.

I’m beginning this journey again, not with a sole focus on the end, but enjoying the trip. Discovering new foods, learning new exercises, pushing my limits and breaking out of the box.

My good friend inspired both Craig and I with her dedicated work doing P90X. She stuck with it for the 90 days and did see great results. Craig and I purchased the Power90 system and did do a few days of it in December but fell out of the routine. We do like the system and are going to start back up, along with bicycle riding.

I’ve got the bike rack on my car, I’ve mapped out several trails on my commute route. My goal is to get 2-5 miles in each night after work. I ride mostly dirt roads or dirt trails. I’ll work that number up as the season goes on.

I’m using LoseIt on the iPhone to track everything I’m eating and when I’m exercising, and when I can, I’ll make a video of the progress.

Let the journey begin!

I haven’t been the first person to get excited about working in the kitchen. In the past I have not been very adventurous. A client of mine though has made two delicious meals from scratch and my mother in law makes these incredible meals all after a day of work. They’ve inspired me.

The other night I made meatballs from scratch. We had ground turkey, we did not have bread crumbs, so I used the magic bullet we have to crumble oyster crackers. They came out delicious. Tonight I decided to do something different with our kielbasa. I bought red and green peppers, a sweet onion and some French bread. I sauted everything in a large frying pan. It too came out really good and pretty healthy. I’m hoping to do more cooking and start thinking outside the box

This was taken in June of 07 in Cape Cod. I cannot wait for spring this year, to get out on my bike. 2008 I don’t know even know what to say. I didn’t do anything physical just worked and slept. I am determined to not start my 30′s being the inactive person I’ve been of my 20′s.

I really enjoyed our bike trip that June. I had never been to Cape Cod and I was looking at everything with a fresh set of eyes. Maybe this time we’ll go for longer than 2 days.

While laying in bed last night, I was browsing around the app store and discovered the All Recipes iPhone app. I’ve been a fan of the AllRecipes.com website for quite a while. Their app is called DinnerSpinner, the concept is you spin the meal choice, then an ingredient choice and finally a preparation time choice. Ironically enough my day job has a client who wants to do something similar to this for their next website.

Here’s a sample view of the spinner. I’ve selected Appetizer, Cheese and Slow Cooker. You can also click a button that says, “Spin Categories”. That button is currently replaced by the “View Matches” button.

Results.

Summary and Directions

Nutritional Information

Reviews

I think All Recipes did a great job putting this app together, it’s simple, fun and doesn’t leave you looking to the website to finish what you started on the phone app.

Real World Application

I could see myself using this while in the kitchen planning meals, but also while on the go, and in need of getting creative with a meal to bring somewhere. Perfect for use in the grocery store, rather than having to sort through emails and papers.

The only feature I see missing is the ability to tie in to account logins on All Recipes and favorite a recipe.

It’s been a really long time since I’ve updated. After my back went out I got into a real funk and just feeling down. I also noticed my energy level was just dropping. This past week I realized I’ve been drinking coffee every single day since I started my new[er] job. For me caffeine will work for a while but then it will actually make me more and more exhausted. This week I’m taking a break from coffee. I’m having green tea and herbal tea only. The other benefit to cutting back on coffee is, I like my coffee very light and with half and half. Needless to say this is a good elimination from my daily routine.

I’ve decided to use iCal to track my health because I have it available to me at work, at home and on my iPhone. It’s very simple, I don’t have to pre-enter information and create databases. I’ve tried Traineo, but it didn’t track food as well as I’d like. I’ve tried Gyminee, and it’s ok but a pain to enter new foods in. I’ve also tried FitDay which also you need to pre-enter foods. If I’m spending my time entering foods, it’s a waste of my time.

In iCal I’m tracking my food for the day, exercise, weight and any other health related items in a separate calendar called “Health”.

I’ll post an update at the end of the week as to how this is working.

I’m putting this down as week 1 since, this is really the first official committment I’m making to logging this every week, and with that here we go.

A brief over view, I’m on the rebound from injuring my back, so intense exercise was out. Just in the past 2-3 weeks I’ve been able to start exercising more intensely. Between being tight on money and really tired, we haven’t been eating the best things. We try to make sure we get a salad each night and get some meat in.

This week I bought some strawberries, even though they’re not organic. I needed something other than Apples and Bananas to go with some cottage cheese. I also started making spinach and egg omlettes again, which I do use organic baby spinach and organic eggs.

Down to the knitty gritty.

This week’s weigh in: 216.5 lbs.

For next week I’d like to see 214 on the scale. I’m going to prepare lunches and breakfast ahead of time this weekend. I’m also going to make sure we use the frozen veggies I bought a week ago. Our dinners tend to be a protein and a starch, and possibly a salad.

I have to document this week, just so I can look back at this in the future and truly appreciate how much I packed in. If you’ve written me, I was supposed to get back to you, I said I’d send you something, please don’t take offense, the week was very, very busy.

Work:

This week at my job we launched a national ad campaign website (not my design), completed the collection of a large amount of materials for a multimedia project, and 3 email campaigns sent out including one which had 27 unique pieces of content that were not dynamic. And in comparison to my boss and co-workers I think my load was lighter than theirs. Even up to Friday night at 6:00 we were still finishing up projects. Wow! I kept saying to people, the weather got nice and the projects just came rolling in.

Personal:

Well I didn’t have much of one until Friday night. Wednesday I took on waking up early. Thursday was semi-successful and Friday, well Craig and I both slept in thinking it was Saturday.

On a fun note. Friday night I met up with a fellow knitter who was thinking about buying a MacBook or MacBook Pro. We met at Starbucks and I showed her around the operating system, answered questions and had her try mine out. She was pretty excited, I told her to think about it, don’t rush. She was making the switch over from a Dell laptop to Apple, and it is a big decision.

This morning I got an email at 7:40, “I’m ready let’s go!”. We met at the Apple store in Danbury at 10am, and purchased her a MacBook Pro 15″. We left it with them to transfer over her files from her old Dell. I headed home and later in the afternoon we met at Panera to go through setting up her email, transferring bookmarks, importing photos to iPhoto and making sure iTunes was all set and running. She’s really excited and I got an email tonight that she’s having a lot of fun.

I’ve successfully switched 7 people from Windows to Macintosh. No complaints.

Goals:

I’m still working on getting up early. Might kick back my wake up time so it’s not quite as aggressive. I want to be successful not insane. As Colin reminded me, “Never give up”. Absolutely true! There’s no time table, no one’s going to punish me and it’s truly a win-win situation.

And… I will be posting on Tuesdays a Weekly Weigh-In, as part of TheDiet. In the sidebar I’m going to keep track of my exercise on Traineo.com. This week I made some much better choices food wise than I have in a while. All in time.

Last but not least, we watched the Transformers movie tonight. It was pretty good, dialogue sucked, but the effects were amazing. I’m such a sucker for cars and driving scenes. Speaking of I’ll be at the NY International Auto Show on Friday for the opening. Drop me a line if you’ll be there that day.

Putting all the puzzle pieces together on my health has been a long road. Heck I can go back on my blog to 2003 and find posts of melt downs wondering why I can’t tackle it. I have paper journals from 1997 with entries of “why can’t I get over this hurdle, why don’t I take it seriously“.

It’s taken a lot of growing up, getting through a lot of personal psychological issues in my own life and my family. For as long as I can remember, someone was telling me I was a brat and lazy. I’ll concede on the brat, when I was younger I was. Some might argue I still am.

Lisa McMillan recommended to me the book The Now Habit by Dr. Neil Fiore. All I can say is wow, every stage of the book I feel like it was my life that was the case study for it. It’s helped me gain a lot of clarity on why I do the things I do, why I react certain ways, why I get overwhelmed and just shut down.

The book also helped me focus on why I have yet to be successful at weight loss. I know how to exercise, I used to sit home in the summers of middle school and early high school watching and going along with Body Shaping. I love to be outdoors doing biking, kayaking or hiking. So that’s not an issue.

Eating. While I don’t choose to make the best decisions all the time, I do know what is good to put in my body and how much of it I should be having. I actually like many more vegetables than I ever did as a kid. Seeing the nutritionist for two months re-affirmed that I’m not clueless and have crazy eating patterns.

What was left… The psychological/mind barrier. Why do I find excuses? Why do I shut down and feel overwhelmed still? What is holding me back from being the successful person I know I can be.

Here are the thoughts that came to my head…

I try to do too much at once, trying to tackle 8 life changing habits at once

I think I have to be perfect the first time out, and any falter and I may as well give up

I feel like I don’t have enough time

I feel the pressure to go along with what ever others are doing

I put way too much guilt and negativity on myself

I put too much weight in others approval of me

Now that I know what the concerns are, I can start to make changes.

STEP 1:
Find time… This is my first goal. Become a morning person. Since my biggest complaint to myself and everyone around me is my lack of time, I need to focus on making more time in my day. Once I can establish that, then I can go back and change what I fill that time with.

That’s the plan!

Good Morning!
I’ve decided to focus on ONE goal for this week; getting up early, specifically between 5:00-5:30. I did ok this morning, I set alarms up to go off at 5:00, 5:15, 5:30 and 5:45. I did finally get up and going on the 5:45 one.

I cooked up turkey bacon, organic eggs, organic spinach, organic shredded cheese into an omelette. Had some Bolthouse juice and some organic coffee I brewed too! It was quite a morning.

I left on time for the Dentist in Danbury, got there 10 minutes early! Had a perfect visit, no cavities, no issues.

Oh and I even had some time to work on my scarf which I’ve neglected for quite a while!

And last night I “graduated” from physical therapy and am going to transition into their Wellness Program.

I’m feeling really good today!

Just wanted to note for the record, who knows I may go back and read these some day. Physical therapy is going really well. This is the routine:

15 minutes electrical stimulation with heat pack

10 minutes of ultrasound

15 reps x 3 of 5 variations of abdominal work (crunches)

15 reps x 3 leg presses at 100 lbs

15 reps x 3 ham string curls at 30 lbs (my weak area)

15 reps x 3 squats with 1 lb medicine ball between knees (helps with knee problem)

I wake up in the morning feeling really good, no more stiffness. I can sit for longer periods without wanting to get up and move around. Except at church where the rock hard wooden benches with no back support irritate it.

All in all things are going much better than they were 6 weeks ago. I see the orthopedist on March 7th for my follow and we’ll see where things go from there.

The physical therapy center offers a Wellness program, which I’m going to sign up for. It essentially allows you to come in and use the gym, still talk to them for small things and get care. Bally’s will be getting a letter from my orthopedist that I will no longer be going there. The best benefit is the physical therapy place is literally 3/4 of a mile from our home, and the people are really nice and very professional.

At this point I’m feeling relatively good. Last week I had my first two physical therapy sessions and between being out of shape, and then having not exercised in 2 months, they were intense.

Right now, I’m doing some simple core work, and when I’m there, they do electrical stimulation on my back along with ultrasound.

We’re reigning in our eating out, and working as a team to eat healthier, so the progress can only be good.

Today we went for a walk in Steep Rock, it was my first outdoors hike since mid December.

As I laid on the floor tonight doing the exercises, I kept saying to myself, “you have to do this, you need to get rid of all this extra crap surrounding your body”. I’m trying hard to have hope that somehow my skin will go back, and I can look like a healthy person again. But somedays I get really fearful that I’ll do all the work and be saggy.

We’ve been wanting to garden for a few years now, but we’ve been living in apartments. Over the summer, a friend let us borrow her Aero Garden. She has a very sustainable outdoor vegetable garden, and she had gotten this as a winter hold over.

Craig got us one for Christmas this year, so we could grow our own salad greens. It’s in our kitchen, on the pantry rack next to the cook books. It’s basically self sustaining. All you have to do is add the water, it turns the light on and off, and will let you know when to add nutrients. The lettuce takes 3-4 weeks to grow to full size, and from that point on you can harvest it for up to 4 months.

This is after a week and a half. We’re looking forward to being able to save some money at the grocery store, and have fresh lettuce whenever we want. The Aero Garden can also grow tomatoes, herbs, strawberries, and a few other things. Strawberries seem interesting to me come summer.

I’m looking forward to sharing more pics.

Post-Christmas I was at 216lbs.

Weighed in this morning at, 211.5lbs.

Since being home and eating lighter, my stomach has gotten a bit smaller and I’m definitely watching what I eat. So gonna keep this downward trend going. I’ve been craving fruits, veggies and water. Woohoo!

Onto the week, and hopefully back to exercising after I see the orthopedist for an update.

Saturday my super cool sister in law came down and presented at our house, a Body Shop at Home party. Kelly and I were the hosts. We decided to do the “Spa Day” theme, which means basically, we get to soak our feet, try on body butters, lotions, a little make up and chill out and relax.

It was much needed after recovering from this whole back issue. I was worried my back wouldn’t be in good enough shape to participate but I was pretty mobile. We had a lot of great laughs, played around with products and ate some delicious food.

As host I was able to clean up on quite a bit of products, so when it all comes in I’ll take a pic. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m not a real “girlie-girl” but this stuff is good quality and makes your skin feel wonderful, and who can say no to that. Now if only our place had some incredible hot tub. Next home…

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted. By the way, Happy New Years everyone.

Post Christmas, I took off the 28th of December through January 1st. Woohoo! 5 days off. On Day #2 I bent down to pick up a very heavy grocery bag and twisted to put it in the cart and herniated a disk in my back.

I freaked out, because I’ve had this happen before and know what it entails. I managed to get to the car and assess whether or not I could drive home. I made it home went inside and laid down on the floor. 5 days I spent horizontal. I probably would have went to a doctor on Monday, but I figured with the holiday the next day, just getting some well needed rest would do the job.

January 2nd and 3rd I worked from home. I was feeling pretty good on the 3rd, and decided heading back to work the next day would be just fine. My drive to work was pretty sore, and when I finally made it there I was back to hobbling. But I made it through the day, and Saturday the 5th I was feeling really good. I did some cleaning up of my home office with Craig’s help, things were good! Sunday still doing good, I went back to work on Monday and Tuesday again doing just fine.

Although I had started to forget that I had had a back problem and that Wednesday I woke up in a lot of pain. Craig had left before me that morning, and I managed to get my shower, but the tough part came, socks… I tried to put my socks on and it really hurt. But I kept pushing thinking, this must be early morning stiffness. I made it down to the car and realized there was no way I could do the twisty, bumpy back roads I normally take. So I took the highway in to work, with the pain getting worse and worse. I kept thinking, “how the heck is this happening I was feeling so good”. At one point in my drive I started to cry out of pain and frustration. I made it to work and sat down and tried to do my job.

As the day went on it got worse, my coworkers had commented on how I seemed to be leaning and bent. I got an emergency appointment with the doctor my husband was seeing for his back. When I showed up, I was starting to slightly feel better, but still a hobbling slow person. He assessed my situation and tried to do some electrical stimulation of the muscles and massage to get it all to calm down. Bad part was I walked out in more pain than I was in before and still had to drive 45 minutes home.

I did what I was taught to do, suck it up, take it easy and go back to work the next day and Friday. By Friday afternoon I couldn’t wait to go home and lay down. This past weekend I stayed in bed the entire time with Sunday being one of the worst days. The thought of taking as many ANSAIDs as I could swallow and keep taking until I got relief seriously crossed my mind. By Sunday evening I knew I could not do this anymore, I needed to see an orthopedist and seriously consider injections. The fact that my hips were completely jutted out to the right and I was listing to the left was insane. Your body is not supposed to do that.

Monday morning I called and it turns out all the good orthopedists were in surgery on Mondays… Great! So I finally got an appointment for Tuesday morning. Craig kindly enough stayed home from work both days to help me with anything I needed to do, and driving me around. The doctor I got set up with was great, she walked me through a series of tests to see where my status was, took x-rays, which I might add I got complemented on my very solid good bone structure. Yay, at least one positive. The x-rays came back fine, so she ordered an MRI of my lumbar area. She also prescribed prednisolone.

I took the prednisolone last night and wow! that stuff is awesome! By the time I finished the “day 1″ dosage it was like I never had a back problem. That’s some good stuff! I’ve also got a pain killer which seems to be helping a bit. I had the MRI done today and again got an excellent technician who worked with me and my claustrophobia.

Lessons Learned:

1. Don’t wait, and be afraid due to past experiences with doctors.
2. Get the weight off! I didn’t have problems with my back until I peaked at a certain weight. I’m remaining really positive about this year, and it being a very transformative year for me. I’m not turning 30 next year without conquering some of my goals and dreams.
3. Don’t get stressed out as much. Say No. Put myself, my family and my health first.

As most know, I need to lose weight and have been intermittently working on it for a while. I’ve recently started working with a nutritionist. Craig is seeing an integrative medicine doctor, who has prescribed a gluten-free diet for a month to clear his system. I’ve also been following James‘ progress over FIT, it helps keep me motivated.

I also saw my OBGYN two weeks ago. I asked her about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, since there are quite a few of the symptoms I’ve had over my life. Some of the symptoms have gone away while others are minor in my life still. If I do have PCOS, it could explain a lot, and could also cause problems when we try to have children. I need to go have a simple blood test done to find out, which I have the paper work for.

While there I also asked her about my weight over the years. I started seeing her when I was 14, because my period came every 2 weeks for a month and half and then stopped coming for almost 3 months. They had all my paper work back to the beginning.

135 lbs at 14 yo

157 lbs at 15 yo

187 lbs at 19 yo

I was pretty shocked to see I had gained over 20 lbs in a year! I don’t remember much from back then, a lot was going on. I do remember my weight from 19 on.

173 lbs at 20 yo

192 lbs at 21 yo

205 lbs at 22 yo

211-215 lbs at 28 yo

I’m trying to look back now and see where things went wrong, or went right. The drop at 20 years old, I was really happy doing seminars, taking classes, exercising with Craig that summer. Then my Dad passed away and I stopped eating, again dropping weight. But a few weeks later I started at a new college, where I dormed, was massively stressed out, and didn’t think, pizza or salad, I choose pizza, chinese take out, subway, and anything else that came in the form of take out.

I’m still trying to get past being angry that I’m even here or dealing with this. Which I know is stupid and I really need to accept it, move on and start making change. Also trying to be patient, which is something I have never been very good at. I want it and I want it now. Yah I was a brat as a kid.

From the Secret and CorrieHaffly’s blog, I need to start a gratitude journal and start appreciating and accepting where I’m at, the positives that are here. I have the knowledge, a gym membership around the corner from our home, a husband who wants to eat healthy too, family that’s supportive, a job with no cafeteria to tempt or vending machines.

I wonder if I can program a “You Can Do It, Believe In Yourself” to pop up on my screen every few hours.

Back to journaling my food, making it to the gym at least 3 times a week, drinking more fluids and being positive

Tonight I went and met with my trainer. We did a slightly different work out from the last time. This time we focused more on my upper body.

10 minutes on elliptical

5 minutes on the track

upper body free weights, 4lb weights

machine upper body workout

stair case x3

upper body free weights, 4lb weights

machine upper body workout

crunches, sets of 15 and 20 x2

reverse crunches set of 10 x4

15 minutes on crossramp

It was an intense but good work out for an hour. I’m amazed at how much clearer I feel and think afterwards. Now I just need a kick in the ass to go more regularly.

For me I keep waiting for Craig to get me motivated but right now I think it’s going to need to be the other way around.

I’m hoping next week to try skiing again and get some hiking in.

I can remember back as far as 4th grade and my Mom saying, “did you drink anything today?” when I’d get home from school, and I’d answer “no just the box of milk”.

Getting water in has always been a challenge for me. I do better when it’s ice cold and preferably some lemon or lime in it. Over at James’ FIT blog, I was reading how much water he was taking in 112 oz a day. Meanwhile if I get 16 oz in a day, that’s a good day.

He suggested 8 x 8 oz glasses of water a day plus another 8 oz per 20 lbs over weight. Doing the math that comes out to 104 oz a day for me. I need to get working. I’ve read this before, specifically on a bike forum, and I’ve also read where if you keep your water in take up, it will help your metabolic rate from dropping.

I’ve got a 32 oz Nalgene bottle at work. I’m going to try setting a timer to in the Dashboard to remind me to drink water.
